A discourse is determined not just by the people taking part in it, but also by the places from which it is initiated. 

Confronting the local environment of another country allows artists to observe a reframing of familiar ideas and to consider new perspectives. Their point of view and practice are inevitably influenced or even challenged by the events and impressions they encounter. This other framework creates reinterpretations of the familiar, for it is only through the encounter with the other or, at least, that which is different and somewhat elusive to understand, that one can learn about oneself and begin to generate new customs and cultures.
The anthropologist and philosopher Martin Buber described this practice in a striking way when he wrote “Man becomes I through the You“.*

As part of the project Binatna / about traces, Le Cube – independent art room invites three Austrian artists (Käthe Hager von Strobele, Edith Payer, Nicole Schatt) and three Moroccan artists (Carolle Benitah, Jamila Lamrani, Leila Sadel) for a collaboration that is part of the artistic residencies framework, in Morocco and Austria. Coming from different contexts, these six artists, share a similar vision, in their treatments and questionings concerning the ephemerality of existence, the nature of memory and its preservation, the contextualization of fragments and traces left and put emphasis on the corresponding priorities.

The works produced by the artists in the framework of the residencies in Morocco and in Austria will be presented for the first time during an exhibition at Le Cube – independent art room in October.
