Jamila Lamrani

Jamila Lamrani works with different mediums and materials, but space remains her favorite one.

She sculptures it through fragile architectures of dark fabrics that evoke the secret folds of memory. Within it, she infinitely builds puzzles of shadow and light that are both entries and openings to dreams, as well as furniture consisting of drawers that contain memories of past lives that still live in hope.

The distance that her installations often impose, and their maze of strained wires looking like bars suggests the confinement the individual chooses and suffers in a society with ambiguities and tensions.

Biography

Jamila Lamrani graduated from l’Institut National des Beaux-arts of Tetouan in 1998.

She has regularly exhibited at Le Cube – independent art room since 2005 and, from 2011 to 2012, actively participated in the development of various projects of the art space.

She has participated in several solo and collective exhibitions, in Morocco and abroad (France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, UK, USA …), and notably, at the Dakar Biennale of Contemporary African Art in 2002.
She participated in two projects conceived around Rêve by curator Marie Deparis Yafil, namely, the exhibition Beyond my dreams in 2012, and in 2013 the project Au-delà de mes rêves shown at the Royal Monastery of Brou and H2M, in Bourg-en-Bresse, during the Biennale de Lyon.

In 2014, she took part in the exhibition Identités at the Institut des Cultures de l’Islam in Paris.

In 2015, her artworks were exhibited at the Museum of Photography and Visual Arts of Marrakech, in an exhibition entitled Trace of the future. At the end of 2015, she participated with her installation “Africa Dreams” at the International Artistic Event Lumières d’Afrique, conceived by African Artists for Development – AAD /a project presented in the occasion of the COP21 at the Théâtre National de Chaillot, in Paris, France. This exhibition was then shown in June 2016 at the Donwahi Foundation in Abidjan, then at the IFAN Museum in Dakar, in February 2017 and March of the same year, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

In spring of 2018, Lumières d’Afrique was presented at Eumetasat in Darmstadt, Germany.
In 2018, the artist also participated in the project Le Pavillon de l’exil at the River Gallery of the French Institute of Saint-Louis.
