Carolle Bénitah was born in Casablanca, she lives and works in Marseille.
“I started photography when the fragile dimension of life imposed itself on me and functioned as an existential crutch. Faced with a reality difficult to apprehend- like sickness- in Autoportrait au rideau rouge, photography has served as a new sense organ.
From the outset, I focused my practice on the field of intimacy. Family, desire, loss, mourning, and women imprisoning are the objects of my quest.
Louise Bourgeois says : « Every day, one has to get rid of one’s past ». For that purpose, there are two methods: either we throw everything in the bin, or we recycle. I choose transformation. It constitutes the basis of my plastic language.
In Photos Souvenirs, I utilize my personal archives and transform them with using embroidery to create an imaginary album like a crossing of appearances. I use the falsely decorative function of embroidery to create designs that break the images of happiness and deconstruct the myth of the ideal family. This slow and precise work is the metaphor of a meticulous fabrication of oneself and of time passing by.
Ce qu’on ne peut pas dire and Ce qu’on ne peut pas voir, are a form of resistance to silence through the interference of drawing and ink writing. I speak of the silence of women in the face of their desires and their difficulty to accept their bodies as a desiring subject.
I develop a protean approach to creation, using the textile accessories that populate the domestic universe of the perfect woman, such as placemats, embroidered handkerchief, tea towel, keychain cloth. Through the trivial objects that I create and embroider, I overthrow the hierarchy of the arts, question identity, and accentuate the idea of transformation.”
