Mohamed Arejdal

Mohamed Arejdal has developed a multifaceted body of work, which explores the territories of his native southernMorocco, where he now teaches. His horizons also stretch to Senegal and Mauritania… His interest in the informal, fleeting adventures that arise out of chance encounters, journeys and wanderings are key te his work, which takes in perfomances, photography, video and installations.

He is resolutely committed te breaking down the boundaries between the studio and the public arena, and the majority of his performances make a direct appeal te the spectator through the artist’s physical involvement in his ability to create something that lies between an initiation rite and a collective examination.

For Mohamed Arejdal, the map arises out of his wanderings and not vice versa. Similarly, the artist’s penchant for diagrams and plans reflects his urge to log incipient spaces. In contradistinction to these positive and productive journeyings, religion, exile and population movement appear in his work through installations involving old clothes, suitcases and various other « relics » of memory.

Mohamed Arejdal is a graduate of the Institut National des Beaux-Arts of Tétouan. He lives and works in Taroudant.
