    El Haïk

In the 80s, the grandmother of Myriam El Haïk lived at 2 Benzerte street, in Rabat. It is exactly where Le Cube – independent art room is located. At the time, the art center did not exist. When Myriam El Haik first entered Le Cube three years ago, she immediately recognized the space of the apartment, the architecture, the view, the light and the trace of her childhood. Obviously, the furniture and decorative elements had disappeared, the interior had been transformed, like the memories of her past.

Struck by this nice stroke of luck, Le Cube proposed a residence to Myriam El Haïk where she could re-appropriate the place.

In this context, the artist decides to reflect and work on the matrix link between her grandmother and herself. This project is the opportunity to take a transversal look at her Franco-Moroccan culture, putting into perspective her own history and artistic practice. Her work on language, the sign, play, and repetition is resolutely linked to transmission. « What was that, turned into this. »

This residence followed by an exhibition is for Myriam El Haïk a unique opportunity to conceive an installation that will transform the apartment where Le Cube – independent art room is based today, and where once her grandmother lived. With this installation she does not intend to take the public in a nostalgia or recreation of a lost atmosphere, but rather to show a singular story that involves the collectivity.
