Gatherer of objects and stories, Jeannette Betancourt articulates on water a transparent narrative, which ranges from derivations of myths and legends to the deconstruction of the processes of water commercialization. There is no interest in formulating conclusions. The objective is rather to confront the public with open questions, encoded in sculptures, installations, videos and objects, presented at Le Cube – independent art room.

Therefore, in the exhibition Eau: Flux/ Situations, Jeannette Betancourt generates a nomenclature of our relationship with water, one that extends from deification to contamination.
Preoccupied for almost a decade with issues that threaten nature, the artist dedicates this exhibition to the source of life itself. Water – as a theme – allows her to access the implicit contradictions of human beings: speculation on the construction of meaning facing the incapacity of the inexplicable; the reasons of pragmatic order that have prevailed in the management of this resource and therefore, the fragmented vision that exists in terms of its collection, distribution and current use.

In the sculptural installation Downpour, Jeannette Betancourt creates an interstice between an image of her childhood and the current hydric tension on the island of Puerto Rico.

On the beach of Salé, during her residency at Le Cube – independent art room, the artist recovers for the work The Sway, the evidence of pollution that is now globalized.

In the Aegean Sea in Greece, she captures in the videos X-ray of Power and Waterwall the temperament and the topography of the sea, respectively. The ocean, every day closer to the tipping point, warns about its power through the ever-increasing intensity of storms.

Jeannette Betancourt lives and works in Mexico City. She is beneficiary of the National System of Creators of Art program (the period between 2013 – 2015) of the National Fund for Culture and the Arts/ Mexico.
