In the exhibition auf/رسم, Katrin Ströbel presents the drawings and videos that she has produced during her three months residency, in Morocco.

Through her work, the artist leads us through the mazes of signs and the semiotic labyrinths that surround us on a daily basis. In her projects, visual and verbal elements are in a constant clash and interference with one another. Thus, the blurred codes hinder the deciphering of messages.

In this exposition Katrin Ströbel displays and questions the interaction between sight, deciphering, and orientation; – they are conditions which manifest even more when we dive into another civilization; a civilization which, by definition, has its own visual and verbal codes.

What significations will these signs and drawings have in a new context? Will they be read and understood differently? Is there a universally understood language of signs which transcends cultural limits?
Can we communicate with images, when the verbal language reaches its limits?

Katrin Ströbel has tackled this question during her stay in Rabat. In her drawings and videos, the artist has exposed the Clichés of European and Arabian art, and made them the subject of her critical considerations.

The uninterrupted dialogue that she has had with Moroccan artists, about different ideas and diverse artistic codes is documented in the book Marokkanische Gespräche/Moroccan interviews. Like a visual translation, the drawings of Katrin Ströbel that accompany of the text, reflect these conversations between artists.
