Townhouse

Established in 1998 in Cairo by William Wells and Yaser Gerab, the Townhouse serves as a crucial institution within the Middle East Arts Scene.

Adapting to Egypt’s ever-changing socio-political circumstances, the space has initiated a wide range of activities within its extensive network of downtown buildings, from meaningful community outreach, landmark exhibitions, and key regional symposia, to numerous international residency programs for artists, curators, writers and filmmakers.

The space has served as an incubator for several important art spaces within Cairo that have gone on to significantly impact the cultural landscape.
On an individual level, townhouse has also played a pivotal role in the careers of many internationally renowned artists, practitioners and curators.

Beyond the visual arts, Townhouse has also expanded to include Rawabet, a unique platform for the independent performing arts scene in Egypt, and the Townhouse Library, a leading resource in contemporary art, critical theory and curatorial practice in Egypt.

Townhouse’s open-door policy has allowed cultural activists from across the board to find an avenue of support for their projects, idea and experiments.
